Fruitcake Time Again

It's that time of year again:  the fruitcake catalogs and brochures are coming in the mail.  Gethsemani Farms Trappist Monks bake a delicious booze-soaked cake, one of which my husband orders every Christmas.  I used to turn up my nose at those fruitcakes, but after a few years of them being around for the holidays and feeling a little adventurous, I cut off a piece, picked out the raisins, and sampled one.  Not bad.  In fact, it was pretty good.

It was last year at fruitcake time that I decided I would start a blog.  First I had to learn all about blogging, so I read The Huffington Post Complete Guide to Blogging and The Everything Blogging Book. Then I had to decide what I would write about in my blog.  This is where it got a little tricky.  I knew I wanted to review books for middle-school readers.  But I also wanted to blog about writing.  And movies and old television programs.  Maybe music.  Occasionally cooking.  So, like a fruitcake, my blog will have a little bit of everything, and like a Texas fruitcake heavy on the pecans, my blog will be heavy on the middle-school book reviews.  At least that's the plan.

So before another year goes by and the fruitcake beckons again, I begin my blog.

  1. Well, Mom, although I respect your newfound appreciation for fruitcake, I still think they're nasty. I like our Christmas Eve shrimp and cold cuts much better. As far as dessert is concerned, I would love if you made that mint/oreo icecream cake you have made in past years. Well, I also would love it if we had roast beef with Yorkshire pudding again one of these years. I think your blog is great so far and I know you didn't intend this to be an order form for Christmas dinner, but you got me thinking about Christmas food and I thought I'd drop a couple hints. You did mention that you might post recipes now and then, so I suggest you post the recipe for that mint oreo dessert and Yorkshire pudding.

I'm glad you got your blog started. It'll be fun to see everything you have to write about. Middle school reading is tricky because a lot of authors talk down to their readers, but there are many good books for young adults and it's a great topic to tackle. I think you should give us some insight into play writing itself.

Well, I am looking forward to seeing True Grit. I would be surprised if it isn't the best movie of the year and that's a brave statement. Love you and good luck!
